MIELIE DOLLS
Mielie Dolls begins with a childhood memory: visits to my grandparents' farm, where my nanny Angelina, a steady, comforting presence, taught me to make dolls from corncobs dressed in scraps of old fabric. Angelina's hands guided mine, and the dolls I made were given to my blind grandmother to hold, passed between hands, seen through touch, known through texture and form. That memory stayed beneath the surface for decades, returning only in my fifties with new weight and clarity, prompting me to remake them.
